Correlates of cannabis vape pen awareness and usage among college students in the United States

 Introduction

The widespread availability of electronic gadgets, including vape pens, has made it possible to consume cannabis in several ways. According to research, using a vape pen to vape cannabis is linked to both increased cannabis usage and a reduction in perceived risks. Understanding these products could make it more likely that you'll use them again. Cannabis rules are changing, and with them, the perception that family and friends condone drug use (injunctive norms) and the usage of vape pens among young adults (18–35 years old) has increased. The correlations between these trends are yet unclear. Alcohol usage and awareness of cannabis vape pens may be correlated with cannabis use, as young adults frequently use cannabis and alcohol together. Thus, we looked at a sample of university students' alcohol consumption as well as other possible correlates of vape pen use and knowledge.


Methods

Surveys from several US institutions were used in this secondary data analysis (N = 270). Using bivariate correlations and logistic regressions, factors associated with impulsivity, alcohol use, social anxiety, cannabis expectations, injunctive and descriptive norms, and aspects of impulsivity were investigated as correlates of vape pen usage and knowledge. Results

Alcohol use was linked to knowledge about and use of cannabis vape pens. Vape pen use was linked to higher frequency of cannabis use, positive expectations, and peer injunctive norms. Knowledge of cannabis vape pens was linked to impulsivity and lack of premeditation aspect.


Conclusions

The current findings provide important information on the correlates of this behaviour, especially in light of the unknown nature and potential implications of cannabis vape pens. In addition, correlations between knowledge and vape pens may identify regions in need of professional intervention and education to stop heavy cannabis vape pen use.
